The Smart People's Guide to Outwitting Bill Collectors

How to Stop Creditors Phone Calls

A creditor is an individual or a company that allows other individuals to borrow money based on an agreement between the creditor and the debtor. Or, as in my situation, a judgment creditor is a crook who uses their knowledge of the law to wheedle money out of innocent people.

It wasn’t long before my creditor began calling me at my home as well as my workplace. They even called as late as ten o’clock at night, reminding me that I need to pay the judgment. The constant reminder that I needed to pay them, and the threats of wage garnishment, bank account garnishment, and arrest for contempt of court (the judge ordered me to reveal my bank account details, and I refused). I lied to the lawyers on the phone and said I had no money, but it made no difference–they just kept on calling, sometimes two or three times a day. I needed to find a way to stop the harassing calls.

I tried turning the ringer off on my phone, but the problem was no one could call me…not even my friends. I wrote the creditor a letter, asking them to stop contacting me at work, but that made no difference.

I knew from my research that getting another phone (even a cell phone) would not help, because creditors can access phone records, even private phone records, if they have a judgment. That meant if I paid $99 to Verizon to get a new phone number, it would only be a matter of time before the creditor got hold of that number.

That’s when I got my first MAC Prepaid phone It’s anonymous (because it’s prepaid), so I didn’t have to worry about my phone records being available to creditors. It cost me $9.99, plus $20 for three months airtime. I use it for incoming calls from my friends, and then I call them back on my landline. The ringer to my landline is switched permanently off, so I never hear that annoying ring! I’m amazed I never figured this out a long time ago…

Of course, it takes a little cash to be able to afford a cell phone. A cheaper option is to stop bill collector calls by getting a second phone line, using the Ol’ Switcheroo method...
